Last month Art Basel took place in Hong Kong and we got lucky enough to get tickets. I went several times since it was quite big and the quality of the galleries and the work exhibited was high. The best time was in the morning before 2pm, before the crowds came in. We found that people were open to share information on the artists they were exhibiting and we discovered many artist unknown to us, especially Asian ones. Here are just a few pictures I made while strolling through the fair.

10 000 Buddhas
The hardest thing when we have a little free time is choosing where to go, what to discover, in which quarter, on which island? But at the same time it is exciting as everything is new to us!!!
Our last outing was spiritual, and the bug bites almost had a spiritual touch to them (well, not that much as they were enormous!!!. next time I’ll bring along sunscreen AND bug repellent ;o)
Imagine a shaded path going up the hill with golden statues of buddhas on both sides. I don’t know how many statues there were, but the guide said 437 steps.
The Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery in Sha Tin is 5 minutes away from the metro station. 100% spirituality for a minimal effort. Well, you still need to go up those steps, and with the current humidity and heat, we were glad once we reached the top.
I find Hong Kong fascinating for these kinds of excursions. In five minutes you are in another world, totally different to the super modern city with thousands skyscrapers.
The statues leading to the monastery represent Arhan, which is a perfected one who has attained nirvana. Quite an achievement, and apparently there is not only one way of getting there, which is reassuring, or?
Once up the hill, you arrive at the main temple with 13000 little gold buddhas on the walls, all different and holding the name of their donor. Outside there are three huge colorful statues and a pagoda.
We went back down by another path and discovered (on top of some more golden buddha statues, but somehow faded) the Wing Wo bee farm. My grandfather was a horticulturist and also had a bee farm; so I’ve always liked honey and the humming of bees.
Mr Wing opened one of the hives for us and showed us the queen. It was magical and I wished I could have spoken Cantonese in order to communicate a bit more with him…
We went back home, happy, with our honey jars. I am not sure if it was because of the buddhas, the bees & honey, or because I had the feeling to have escaped to another world for a few hours….

Tokyo
Tokyo
Today I feel like telling you about my weekend, I guess you won't hold it against me.
C had to go for business to tokyo, and so I just decided to go with him. While he was working I had a few wonderful days to walk around, hang out and get as much as I could from this fascinating city.
I had always imagined Tokyo as a busy place, full of people with skyscrapers everywhere and energy. The movie from Sofia Coppola "Lost in Translation" probably has something to do with this view on things. Had I arrived directly from Europe, I would have seen the city like this I suppose, but after almost four month living in Hong Kong, Tokyo appeared to me as a quiet, though huge place. I had spac, I could breathe, and walk without having to fight against people to walk on the streets like it can happen where we live. Tsim Sha Tsui is one of the most densely populated areas in HK; the other day when the Rubber Duckie was mooring near Habour City, it was impossible to move around.

Back to Tokyo. We had two hotels which enabled us to discover two different areas of the city. We slept south of in Roppongi then in Ginza. The first area is residential with one or two stories houses. Ginza on the other hand is dense, higher, brighter but also more touristy. The mix of both areas was simply harmonious.
I also found that Tokyo was very clean and orderly. Could it be that the Japanese are the Germans of Asia? Everything has its place, streets are clean, smokers gather in smoking areas, people are friendly everywhere. One evening as we were leaving the restaurant the chef himself accompanied us to the door!
For the little story, I thought the public toilets were great. The top of my list is still the one in Pacific Place here in HK because they are super design, but in Tokyo there is the music on top. It is in a Ginza mall that I had the most surprising toilet experience. On top of the usual buttons for the water and air jets, the heating of the seat, this one was also making a fountain noise so that nobody could hear the organic noises...what a good idea though to install toilets with sounds of nature in public areas or even in companies!
For you today no photos of the toilets, but of Tokyo. The architecture inspired me. Enjoy the discovery if you don't know the town, but I'm afraid they are not really touristy, as usual with me ;-)
L'architecture moderne m'a beaucoup inspirée.

A few years ago as I was traveling in Singapore I was shocked to see so many people wearing crocs, you know those ugly big plastic shoes that come in various colors. Blue, pink, green, you name it. Flashy and reminding people of holidays and chromatic hobbies. That day, I promised myself to never ever wear them! They are too ugly (sorry for those of you who like them, but I don't censor myself here!!!). The lack of refinement and aestheticism are just something I can’t handle! So, no plastic shoes, the point is moot!
Since we arrived in Asia I have noticed an increasing number of plastic objects in the fashion world: Philippe Stark made shoes for Kartell on top of the chairs, Furla launched a line of handbags, as well as Chanel, and I am not even talking about the Ice Watch and Melissa Brazilian shoes...
A the beginning I couldn’t grasp the fury of all things plastic, polyethylene, PVC, nylon, resin, silicon...only when I arrived in Hong Kong did I have an ah ha moment! Everybody is talking to us about the humidity here, and about the summer months that can get unbearable. Simon from Brussels was telling me before I left how he remembered the water streaming on his walls when he lived in HK in the eighties; I was thinking he was exaggerating since it has been a while since he was here, but at the same time I had to believe him...and we only have May now, and some days can already be suffocating. I was told in July the air-co and the dehumidifier will run non-stop here. To be followed!
The first thing I bought when we moved in the new flat was a dehumidifier! and I remember buying a humidifier in Bxls...I will soon be able to open a utility store; I am now equipped for all kinds of climates. The saleswoman of Wing On (the department store that has everything for your home; in a word my new sexshop!!!) recommended me a Mitsubishi “because they are made in Japan and have no part made in China”; her words! I did not dare contradict her and bought the beast. In Europe I used to buy German when I wanted something reliable and of good quality; now I buy Japanese!
My new best friend is supposed to protect me from humidity and mildew. When it reaches 76% it displays a little awful monster, a kind of humidity devil, and believe me I don’t want to have that guy at home. So I am slowly learning how to use the machine as well as the air-co as the humid months approach. My artillery also includes little bags that I put in my cupboards, drawers and shoes; I also walk around following my nose to make sure those nasty humidity devils have not launched a secret attack. I trust my nose and it is quite reliable ;o)
April is quite humid here as well, it rains a lot and we have daily storms. Imagine the Brussels drache (i.e. uber heavy rain for those not familiar with the concept) but here it is 20-28°c. I have a new weather app on my phone that alerts me when a storm is coming, or an amber rain like the other day. It gives you enough time to seek shelter (in theory because I got drenched the other day as I forgot my umbrella) I forgot the normandy principle of never going out with a sweater and an umbrella...The result was not a cold, but compulsive shopping...shoes...plastic shoes. They are black, thin, discreet and they even smell like strawberry and pineapple (no crocs, I kept my word!!!)
And here is a little extra plastic thing for you. the Rubber Duckie landed in HK for a few days. The most amazing thing about it, is how many people came to make a photo!!! it was FULL!!!

My name is Bond... / Mon nom est Bond...
Everybody who knows me is aware that I like (understatement per se!) James Bond...For my last birthday C gave me the Bond box with all the movies, from the first to the last one Quantum of Solace, which only positive point was that the bad guy was embodied by a French actor; cute Mathieu Amalric.
I loved Casino Royale, hated the next one, and literally LOVED Skyfall (saw it at the premiere in Brussels before we left). Since I had the box, it seemed only logical for me to get the latest movie to complete my collection. Contrarily to my hubby who compares meticulously and only buys at the best price and right moment (not unlike a stock broker!) I am a more spontaneous person, a bit like an MI6 agent you could say ;o)
The other day we were strolling through the Pacific Place mall, and went in the Hong Kong Records shop, and guess what? it was there, the latest James Bond, waiting for me! All of a sudden I could picture the nice evening we would have, and I was squeaking in anticipation. So I bought the film and walked happily back to my new home!!!
and then….OOmmpfffff…..
it was the biggest disappointment….After an hour of action between Istanbul, Shanghai and Macau, it all went bust...I bought a Chinese version. Even if James speaks the language of Shakespeare and not that of Xi, the censors cut some essential minutes of MY movie!!!
In the Macau casino during the fight with the Chinese guy and the huge iguana (and I always thought iguanas were vegetarians..). My movie is at least one minute short, and three chinese too! I had read that Big Brother had decided to cut the scene since it portrayed its people as complete idiots compared to his majesty James, and that’s why they disappeared. So you will understand that I am a bit frustrated. Basically the scene ends before it even begins. Two hits, the fat guy takes the gun, tries to shoot and get eaten… that’s all. Can I have the full version for my next birthday!
At least with the latest Tarantino movie, censohip is more efficient, they don’t show the movie in China, full point (technical problem officially). It came out in HK, but we did not have time to see it. To be fair, planning to go to the movies is not so easy here. When we were living at Elements upon our arrival, we tried to go and see Django Unchained, but the times looked similar to this: Monday/10:50pm, Thursday/1:15pm, Sunday/11;30am. We tried to understand the logic behind this, but could not as there is none! Since then I have discovered an app for my phone, and it shows the movies, time and places, it makes it easier.
So now we are waiting for a cool movie to go and see. For indi films we’ll buy the DVDs… in Europe ;o)

No post since a few days, but we moved to a new apartment and are now taking a few days of. I'll be back in a few days though !
